SEO Explained for Beginners

If you’re on the internet, you may have heard the term SEO thrown around. If you are completely confused by what SEO actually is, that’s fine as it simply means you are less of a nerd than I - much less.
Before we get technical, we’ll define SEO in a way a normal human being can understand. If a random person hands you a flyer for some new restaurant, you probably won’t be very keen to go check the new place out. You’ll assume that the random person who handed you the flyer works for the restaurant, and you’ll probably just go to your favorite restaurant next time you go out.
However, if five of your best friends tell you about some new restaurant, there is a good chance that you’ll check it out. Following me so far?
SEO is the mastering of that concept, but on the internet. If one random person tells you to visit a website, you might check it out. However, if twenty of your friends are posting the site’s URL on Facebook, you’ll probably go see what it’s about. SEO stands for “search engine optimization”. The concept of SEO revolves around Google taking your place. If Google is being told by one random person to check out a site, it will say “ah that site might be okay”. If Google is noticing tons of people about a site, they’ll probably say “this site might have potential”.
The difference is that Google isn’t being told to check out websites. The act of telling Google about a site, is a link placement. When Google runs around the web, using robots, it sees all the links that are placed. Every time it finds a link, it’s like a person (or website) is telling Google to check it out.
The more links to your site there are, on the web, the more Google will say “this site might have potential”. So that’s SEO broken down for you.
Now there are many ways to improve your SEO. However, let’s go back to the easy concept. If there’s one person telling you about a site, it might be good. But if there’s twenty five people telling you about something, there’s a good chance it’s really cool. Do you know how you a website, or restaurant, gets twenty five people talking about it? By being good, high quality and appealing. That’s the most important aspect of improving your SEO.
